I took this photo at the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History in the Parc du Cinquantenaire, Brussels, Belgium. To me, the statue was inconographically symbolic. In the midst of the chaos and carnage of war, peace stood on the battlefield, an olive wreath raised high above her head, waiting patiently to be acknowledged.
I was also struck by the row of Gothic-style arches stretching away behind her, and by the beams that appear to converge and merge into her arms. This, to me, was overwhelmingly paradoxical in its symbolism. Peace is at one with a building that bears testament to sacrifice and brutality.
